Facts & Short history of Teaneck

Teaneck, which is a suburb of the New York Metropolitan Area, and a township in Bergen County, New Jersey, was created on February 19, 1895, by an act of the New Jersey Legislature, and it is situated on the crossroads of the eastern terminus of Interstate 80 and Interstate 95.

The origin of name ‘’Teaneck’’ remains unknown, but some historians believe that it might have a Native American origin, which in English translation would mean ‘’the woods’’. Others believe that the term has a Dutch origin, which could mean ‘’neck where there are willows’’.

During the 2000 census, the Teaneck Township’s population was estimated at a number of nearly 40 000 inhabitants, making it the second most populated municipality in Bergen County, while in 2008, the population decreased at a number of little over 38 000.
